What is IR or Insulin Resistance in horses?

Insulin resistance in horses is a condition that is on the rise. Normally, blood sugar levels naturally increase in horses when when sugar or carbohydrates are eaten. This causes insulin to be secreted by the pancreas allowing glucose to be carried into the cells and triggering blood sugar levels to go back to normal.

In IR/Insulin Resistance in horses, the cells are unable to properly utilize the insulin. So the glucose turns into stored fat instead of providing energy for the cells.

Many horses suffering with Laminitis have elevated insulin levels in their blood because it can’t penetrate the cell walls.

“We know that insulin resistance is associated with the risk of laminitis in ponies and certain breeds of horses, and so is obesity. Together, this syndrome is known as equine metabolic syndrome (EMS),” explains Simon Bailey, BVMS, PhD, of the University of Melbourne.

  • Excessive water consumption
  • Chronic laminitis
  • Founder
  • Thick coat and slow shedding

What causes a horse to be insulin resistant?

There are many factors which can lead to a horse becoming IR. Genetics play an important role as some breeds are pre-disposed to developing problems metabolizing sugar.

A relatively new condition is being recognized in human medicine, currently called syndrome X. This is a group of symptoms related to insulin resistance or hyperinsulinemia and an inability for the cells to transport glucose into them. The disease commonly called “Cushing’s syndrome” in horses has many of the same characteristics as syndrome X has in people. Dr. Joyce Harman

The problem is modern domesticated horses haven’t evolved to be able able to metabolize large amounts of carbohydrates and sugar. Insulin resistance is not a problem in Wild Horses because they are moving sometimes up to 20 miles a day foraging for their food. They don’t stand idle for hours on end at an all-you-can-eat salad bar consuming excessive calories and sugar in the grasses, leading to obesity and conditions like laminitis and founder.

Modern horse keeping is exactly the opposite of how the Wild Horse lives. Stall keeping, highly refined horse feed, stress, and a sedentary lifestyle all contribute to our horses becoming overweight, leading to insulin resistance problems. Horses that are kept in a stall can’t move and burn off calories like a wild horse. They are generally fed large high carb meals once or twice a day instead of a diet of small meals while moving and foraging.

Remember horses aren’t “grazers”, they are “foragers”.

The chance of a horse developing IR increases as they age. The older a horse gets the slower the metabolism thus leading to weight gain and their ability to cope with stress decreases as hormones are no longer plentiful.

My horse has been diagnosed with Insulin Resistance (IR). While this is not a disease, but a metabolic type. I will treat every horse going forward the same way, low sugar and starch diet. These herbs give my horse what he would naturally get in the wild that domestication has striped him of. I can not say enough about “Sugar Balance Naturally”.

This stuff really works! I thought I was going to have to put my mare down because her laminitis was so bad. After 2 weeks on this at 1 scoop a day she made a miraculous recovery. She is sound, has lost weight and looks and feels better than she has in years! Thanks for saving my mare!

I’ve only had my horses on the sugar balance for a week, I would’ve waited to review this for another 3 wks, but just after one week so far they have improved some, so I’m very hopeful at this point that the sugar balance is going to work for them. One foundered 9 yrs ago & every so often she gets lame, I give her bute & she’s fine till the next time. If this works it will help her so much & we can possibly get her back to be the great riding horse she was. This is a great alternative to giving them medicine! After a month on this & they keep improving I would give the 5 rating.

This is an amazing product!! I have excellant natural barefoot trimmers for my horses. They have been fighting a separation in one of my horses front hooves even though he actually has just about perfect hooves otherwise. Keeping them off of grass and doing all the right things didn’t seem to help..UNTIL I started giving my horse this Sugar Balance Naturally last Nov (2019), After a couple of months on Sugar Balance Naturally my trimmer noticed a possitive difference in his hooves. My trimmer now notices his feet are getting better and better with each trim. YAY!!! After 5 years of his separation, this Sugar Balance Naturally is the TICKET!! Thank you Rocky for this product….and you know the problem we had with him. 🙂

This stuff is amazing! For years my horse has has “bad” feet. I thought it was just how he was until I found out that the problem was that he had Laminitis. I searched the internet and found Sugar Balance Naturally and the improvement has been tremendous. We keep him up off the grass at night and turn him out early morning. I check his hooves when we bring him in. No sign of heat or pulse to indicate laminitis. Cracks have disappeared, intermittent lameness and abscessing has stopped. He’s barefoot and we’ve never been able to ride him without hoof boots, but now his feet are so healthy we don’t use them. I can’t even express how grateful I am for this product and the relief it has given my horse and our family. It’s like we have a new horse! THANK YOU!

Best thing I have ever used for my laminitic horse. My barefoot trimmer recommended this after realizing that my horse had laminitis and we were struggling to keep her sound. She had no prob eating it in her oats and the change has been downright remarkable.

I will never be without this. Before I started using this for my horse he was constantly lame, had recurring abcesses, and had foundered twice. After using this for just a week there was a noticeable improvement in his feet. He was moving better than he had in years. This product keeps him comfortable year round and I’m even riding him again.
