Can I Give My Cat Kelp? Answer: Yes

Kelp for cats is full of nutrients and it is not only beneficial to people but to cats and other pets as well. It is a commonly used ingredient in cat supplements and could play an important role in ensuring that your pet receives the right amount of vitamins and minerals that it needs to keep healthy.

Thyroid, Adrenal and Pituitary Glands

Kelp is rich in iodine. Iodine is a chemical element necessary (at least in trace amounts) to prevent a condition called hypothyroidism in dog and catss (it is called goiter in human beings). The rich mix of iodine and other minerals are important to keep your pet’s entire glandular system, particularly the thyroid, adrenal and pituitary glands, in healthy working order. This in turn ensures your cat’s metabolism works efficiently, which is an important element in maintaining a healthy weight.

Hyperthyroidism

It is important to keep the right dosage to prevent any problems. One of the possible side effects of too much kelp consumption is hyperthyroidism. This is why it is not recommended for cats that are already suffering from this condition. Though it is generally safe to give to your pet the dosage given on the label, you may still want to consult your vet if you want to make sure that you are giving the right amount.

Allergies and Fleas

Anything which helps flea control is good news for dog owners. Diane Stein, in her book “The Natural Remedy Book for Dogs and Cats,” says after three weeks of kelp supplementation there is a noticeable reduction in fleas on animals who have an infestation. This suggests that kelp repulses fleas and that using the supplement regularly is a useful addition for flea treatment. Kelp also reduces itchiness in those dogs with skin allergies and improves the overall condition of your dog’s skin and coat.

General Health

Kelp also supports many of your cat’s other body functions such as the digestive system. Because it is high in iron the blood and heart may benefit. In older cats especially it is recommended to support a strong immune system, which can protect them from a range of diseases. Also, cats on kelp supplements have been known to heal faster from surgery, because the amino acids in the seaweed help support tissue repair. And it could help you and your cat to live longer. The Japanese have long maintained that eating seaweed is a source of their longevity.

Sea Kelp Naturally health benefits for your pet are an array of vital vitamins, minerals and elements. These vital nutrients are readily absorbed into the body including iodine, iron, calcium, magnesium, Vitamins B and K.

Kelp may help facilitate the removal of heavy metal traces from your pet’s body especially those exposed to toxic substances or high levels of radiation.

Improved Digestive Health
Kelp supports digestive health for your pet in several different ways. High protein and fiber keeps your pet full longer, eliminates constipation with regular consumption and helps break down complex starches that deliver slow released energy.

Kelp is a source of antioxidants, but it also contains certain types of antioxidants not commonly found in other foods. These include several alkaloids, the vitamins C and E, plus minerals, zinc and manganese.

Thyroid Health
The iodine found in Kelp is valuable for normal functioning and may help regulate hormones in the thyroid.

  5. My cat has a severe skin allergy that she has been medicated for for several years. Without meds she licks her hind legs, her belly, and the base of her tail to complete baldness, with the meds she is slightly better- but only slightly. And she is super picky, so she won’t always eat the food with the meds- its been stressful for years. When she gets enough of the meds, they make her sleep. I tried her on the Sea Kelp Naturally product. The first feeding with the kelp mixed in, I didn’t give her her meds. I noticed a change right away, it was like night and day. And she has not had her meds since and she is growing her fur back. The best part is that she’s not asleep all the time, so I feel like I am getting to know my cat for the first time in years. I use a very small quantity of the kelp and it works wonders. I am so stoked. Thank you so much!!!!
